Amherst: School-wide Slip n’ Slide

Freshly waxed hallway floors can be a safety hazard during hot weather.

Schools were closed Thursday, September 12 at Amherst-Pelham Regional School District due to what the school’s webpage stated were “weather-related building issues”.

This unexpected “snow day” in September was announced after a reported 22 students slipped and fell on the floors, as Principal Mark Jackson told The Hampshire Gazette. The Gazette reports that Jackson said the school’s floors were “rewaxed in the month before the start of school. When the temperature goes up, the wax melts and it makes it slippery.”

Temperatures in Amherst rose to the mid-nineties on Wednesday and were forecasted to be in the high-eighties on Thursday.

Because the surprising heat spell created a dangerous environment for the children, superintendent Maria Geryk decided to close all six district schools to ensure the students’ safety. Fortunately, no one was injured in the fiasco and classes resumed that Friday.

Amherst’s floor issues hit close to home for many Williston students who also witnessed several falls last Wednesday when the floors were being washed in the Athletic Center. “I was wearing flip flops and just walking down the hall, then when I got in front of the cage I put my foot down and next thing I know… I’m doing the splits” reports junior Jennifer Carellas. The floors dried soon after and no one was injured.

The moral of the story is, of course, step lively.
