Williston’s Boys Lacrosse Team decided to bleach their hair during their preseason. Why? They don’t know either.
Pre-season began early for the Williston boy’s lacrosse team, as they had to come back to campus on Thursday, March 20. The whole team stayed in the unused Conant Dorm. A very busy pre-season containing two practices a day, three scrimmages, and other activities led to players finding ways to have fun and relax.
It is a known tradition for some schools or sports to bleach their hair, but during the ’24-’25 school year, and the past Winter and Fall seasons no other Williston team has changed their appearances like the Boys Lacrosse team has.
Barrett Clark, a junior at Williston, is a member of the team but did not want to bleach his hair.
“Everybody wanted to bond as a team and we thought that if they all look the same on campus that they’d be more recognizable as part of the lacrosse team,” Barrett said. “I didn’t want to bleach my hair because I did it before and it didn’t look good.”
“I [Kind of] killed my hair and I wanted it to grow back so I buzzed it hoping that the guys wouldn’t bother me as much about bleaching,” he said.
Alexander Landon, a junior day student at Williston, believes that the team dying their hair together brought them closer leading up to the season.
“I don’t regret it; I think it was a fun way to try something different and show team spirit,” Alex said.
Bryan Moore, a Williston day student from Feeding Hills, Mass., bleached his hair for lacrosse and didn’t think twice about it.
“I don’t regret bleaching,” Bryan said. “I don’t regret it because I am already blonde so there wasn’t a crazy change in color.”
Joseph Killcommons, a senior boarder at Williston, was present when the team chose to bleach their hair but decided not to participate.
“I did not bleach my hair because I want [my] normal hair for prom and graduation,” Joseph said. “I would rather bleach over buzz 100 percent because I think I would look ridiculous with a buzz and with a bleach at least I have normal hair.”
Hayden Hutner and Nick Guay, junior roommates in Ford, both agreed to do nothing with their hair for the lacrosse season.
“I don’t think I want to be blonde,” Hayden said. “My mom would be mad.” “I wouldn’t want to buzz either because my hairline is clapped.”
Nick also worries about how a bleached haircut would affect his appearance. “I also don’t think I would want to ruin my hair and kill it,” Nick said. “A buzz would make my forehead look huge,” he said.
