As the snow melts and the weather warms up, the Williston Boys Track and Field team is sprinting into action.

Ending third in New England as a team for NEPSAC division II in 2018, the team has big plans for this season with help from their senior captains. 

Dating back to the early 1900s, Williston track has built and impressive legacy in NEPSCAC division II. The team is coached by a veteran staff, including Mr. Rivers, Ms. Jenkins, Mr. Porter, Ms. McCullagh, and Ms. Lucia and is led by head coach Chris Pellicia, whose motto is “we never stop.”

Leading the boy’s team are post graduate Abood Abuissa, a 2018 NEPSCAC champion hurdler, and Jake Goodman, a senior sprinter committed to Bryant University, along with captains DJ Poulin and Insoo Kang. The team began preseason March 19 and got off to an amazing start, with plenty of new faces eager to as well as strong returners to lead the charge.

The secret behind Williston’s success is the wide spread of athletes the teams consists of. The team has athletes from the football, soccer, hockey, wrestling, and basketball teams. The athletes’ natural ability often leads to a great contribution on the track. Even though track is many athletes’ off-season sport, the team still succeeds.

During the first week, the boys have been doing dynamic stretches, running, and plyometric work to get their bodies ready for the season. With the weather and the bleak conditions of the track, it has been tough for the team to get into events. But within the next week the team looks forward to getting right into it.

Abood ’19 believes that the team’s success in meets will be determined by how hard they practice.

“Staying consistent every day, knowing that track is not a main sport for most us, it’s crucial that we still lock in every day,” he said. “We have a lot of athletes that want to get better all-around which is going to lead to our success in the long run.

As part of the Williston Track and Field team, I can confidently say the culture is ecstatic and the captains and coaches do a good job of leading us in the right direction. Although there is a lot of pressure coming off last season’s success, our hard work and determination will put us in the lead.

Jake Goodman ’19, is excited for the meets to get started.

“Knowing that the standards are set high from last season, with the way this team works, the sky is the limit,” Jake said.
