A popular dance competition being brought back to life with new cast.
“Dancing with the Stars” has started its 33rd season, and the celebrities on this season have reignited interest in the long-running dance competition. Olympians, professional athletes, and reality stars appear as competitors this season.
The celebrity dance competition pairs famous celebrities with professional dancers to choreograph and perform ballroom dances every week in front of a panel of judges, who give feedback and vote couples off. The show first aired on June 1, 2005, on ABC.
Every week a new couple gets eliminated until there are five left. Those five couples compete to win the championship. The first celebrities to be on “WTS” were Trista Sutter, Rachel Hunter, Evander Holyfield, Joey McIntyre, John O’Hurley, and Kelly Monaco. The first winner wasAlec Mazo. Hosted Alfonso Ribeiro and Julianne Hough, former winners, host the show. Other winners have included influencer Charli D’Amelio in season 31, former NBA player Iman Shumpert in season 30, and actor and singer Jordan Fisher in season 25.
Maggie Duffy, a sophomore from Portland, Maine, looks forward to every Tuesday night to watch the new episode.
“I think it’s making a comeback because they are putting noticeable and likeable people on the show,” she said. “For example, I’m watching this season because the most recent ‘Bachelor’ Joey Graziadei is on it and I watched his season of ‘The Bachelor’ and it was really interesting and I really loved it.”
Maggie likes watching the show because feels like she’s sitting at the judges panel along with Carrie Ann Inaba, Derek Hough, and Bruno Tonioli.
“I love watching it because I like acting like a judge, I also enjoy watching the dances because I rate them and judge them myself,” she said.
For Maggie, it’s not the dancing that really matters.
“I can’t really relate with the dancing part of it,” she said, “I just like to see celebrities who are relevant dance, so if you like dance you’ll probably like it even more than I do.”
Season 33 is stacked with influential contestants: Danny Amendola, Joey Graziadei, Dwight Howard, Chandler Kinney, Ilona Maher, Stephen Nedoroscik, and Jenn Tran are still fighting to win the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy.
Maggie told The Willistonian that her favorite couple was either Ilona Maher and Alan Bersten, or Joey Graziadei and Jenna Johnson.
