On April 19th at 3:05 in the morning, Aaron Hernandez, an ex New England Patriots player was found dead in his prison cell. He was 27 years old.

Hernandez committed suicide by hanging himself with his bed sheets and hanging them from the window at Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Leominster, MA.

Hernandez was just found not guilty on Friday April 14 for the double murder of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado in a drive-by shooting outside a nightclub in the South End of Boston in 2012 which was from an altercation at a nightclub on Friday April 14. Hernandez was serving a life sentence for the murder or Odin lloyd.

The former New England Patriots tight end was just beginning to make a name for himself as one of the best players in the National Football League when he was convicted of murder in 2015 of former semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd on June 17, 2013, in North Attleborough,  He was sentenced to life in prison without parole which he had appealed.

Hernandez was found with the bible verse John 3:16 written on his forehead. There were also three hand written letters found in his cell.

The news of Hernandez was surprising to some. Billy Smith, a junior from Boston and a New England Patriots fan, thought Hernandez squandered his opportunity to have a career in the NFL.

“He threw so much away at such a young age,” said Smith. “A lot of kids would have loved to be in his spot, but I don’t have a comment for what happened to him.”

Kyle Caddo ’17 had stronger words about Hernandez.

“I do not feel much sympathy,” Caddo said. “The man was a murderer and was convicted as such.”
