Dutch Journalist Killed by Terrorism in Libya
Dutch journalist Jeroen Oerlemans was killed in Libya on Sunday, October 1, by an Islamic State sniper. According to the government spokesman, Oerlemans was covering a battle between pro-government forces and the Islamic State while being shot. He left behind three children and a girlfriend. The tragedy once again painfully reminded people of the dangers journalists face.
Philippines’ President Shocks the World With A New Wave of Violence
The newly elected president of Philippine Rodrigo Duterte has started a new wave of violence in order to wipe out drug-related crime. During Duterte’s campaign, he claimed that his policy was to kill all the drug addicts and he promised to kill 100,000 criminals within his first six months in office. His extreme policies have largely affected the poorest parts of the Philippines and resulted in the deaths of over 30,000 people. On Friday, September 30, Duterte compared himself to Hitler in a public speech, saying he would be “happy to slaughter” three million addicts. Later on October 2, Duterte apologized towards the world for the comparisons he drew between the brutal anti-drug war and Hitler and the Holocaust.
