South Korean President Faces National Impeachment Vote
On Friday, December 9th, an impeachment vote against President Park Geun-hye was held by South Korea’s National Assembly. South Korea’s Parliament voted for Park Geun-hye’s impeachment. Park has been accused of “extensive and serious violations of the Constitution and the law.” Park’s government has been brought down by the corruption scandal while protests across the country become more and more intense. Accusations against Park include extortion and abuse of power, leaking confidential government documents, violating the Constitution, and bribery. Earlier this week, Ms. Park announced she would resign from her position in April.
Germany Fears Election Disruption Due to Cyber-Attacks
On Sunday, December 5th, a cyber attack infected as many as 900,000 Internet users of Deutsche Telekom, Germany’s largest telecom company. A software named Mirai was used to launch the attack, which sought out vulnerable connected devices and used them as remotely controlled Internet bot. German politicians claimed they suspected that Moscow was behind the cyber-attack and feared their country was becoming another focus of Moscow’s plan to disturb Western democracies.
