Bombing in Aleppo: Worst in 5 Years
After losing the hope of a cease-fire treaty, the Syrian military and its Russian ally bombed Aleppo, one of the largest cities in Syria. Aleppo is partially occupied by the rebels and home to roughly two million citizens. On Tuesday, September 27, the Syrian armies successfully took back a district formerly controlled by the rebellious groups following days of airstrikes. However, despite the military success, the city remained vulnerable. Many died while the bombing continued; city facilities were continuously destroyed. Due to the intensity and ferocity of the air attacks, Russia was accused of “barbarism” and “war crimes” by the United States and Britain.
Student Protests in South Africa Turn Violent
Starting in September, students in South Africa have been protesting against plans to increase college tuition. The movement was triggered by Blade Nimzimande, the Minister for Higher Education and Training, when it was announced that 2017’s college fee increases would be decided individually by each school. Proceeding his announcement, major student demonstrations and class suspensions emerged across South Africa. On Wednesday, September 21, the protests turned violent when the police began firing stun grenades and rubber bullets at the crowds. At least two students were injured.
