Speaker season has sprung.
In the fall and spring, there is music coming from speakers all around. Many students enjoy using speakers instead of using their headphones. Speakers are not only used at practices, but for socializing while spending time outside in the warmer weather.
Most commonly used on campus are JBL speakers. JBL speakers were founded in 1946 by James Bullough Lansing in Los Angeles, California. They are known for powerful, bass-rich sound, durability, and a wide range of portable and home audio options. JBL offers a wide variety of portable Bluetooth speakers, from small, rugged models like the Flip and Clip series to larger, more powerful options like the Extreme and Charge series, according to their website.
Junior boarder Daryn Fox, from Bermuda, believes it is easier to socialize while listening to music on a portable speaker.
“I use my speaker just because me and my friends listen to all the same music. It is easier to hear and talk to people because when I use my AirPods, I have my noise cancelation on,” she said.
Daryn and her friends, myself included, enjoy listening to a variety of music. From country to rap, we listen to it all. Our favorite artist now is Drake. Drake is a rapper from Canada who gained popularity in 2009 when he released his mixtape “So Far Gone.” His best hit so far was his song “One Dance” released in 2016, which held the number one spot on the UK charts for 15 consecutive weeks.
Daryn also thinks speakers make the vibes better for a group of people.
“I think it just makes it more fun,” she said. “Everyone loves music playing on speakers because I feel like if it’s just on your phone you can’t hear it.”
JBL’s most popular speaker is the Flip 6 which costs around $130. You can customize your speaker however you want by changing the color or adding pictures.
Like Daryn, Skyler Walker from Rhode Island also prefers to listen to music on a speaker.
“People can listen to the same music at the same time, and it’s louder than your phone,” she said.
Daryn uses her speaker every time she is not in her classes or during the school day.
“If I’m in my room during a free I usually have it on or going to practice, leaving practice, any time that I’m not in a public space or walking to class,” she said.
