November 25 was rivalry weekend in college football, meaning Ohio State and Michigan suited up to play against each other at Michigan Stadium, more popularly known as “The Big House” for the 119th time. With a final score of 30-24, Michigan walked away with the win, leading thousands of Michigan fans in attendance to rush the field.
The rivalry began Nov. 30, 1918, and has been active for the past 105 years. Michigan has won 62 of their games; Ohio State has won 51. The teams, which both compete in the Big 10, have tied six times.
There is much debate on which program is better, with one of the two teams regularly holding down the top ranked spot throughout the season. As of the end of the 2023 college football regular season, Ohio State had a higher overall win rate at 73.4%, while Michigan was behind them with 73.3%.
The rivalry between these schools starts weeks before, with Ohio State crossing through all the M’s on their campus and signs specifically. But both teams’ fans are known to be superstitious. Some gameday superstitions include eating the same meal for gamedays, wearing specific colors, and sitting in the same places.
Mike Thomas, a Michigan alumni and longtime fan, has personal superstition about what he wears to watch the game.
“I also have a shirt, jersey, and hat combo I haven’t washed since we first won two years ago and have worn it each win since!” he said.
Malaya Anaba, a junior from Fishers, Indiana, is a Michigan fan till the day she dies. Malaya has family from Michigan and watches the game every year.
She loves, “how much it brings the whole the whole state of Michigan together with the tailgates and stuff.”
