Mixed Reactions Over Joe Paterno Honor
Joe Paterno and Penn State are back in the news, four years after the sex scandal that led to serious suspensions and the firing off one of the most historic coaches ever in college football.
With Penn State University recently celebrating the former head coach, it left many people curious about the school’s decision, due to all of the controversy that surrounded him in 2011. The ceremony, which took place September 17, marked the 50th anniversary of Paterno’s first game as coach of the Nittany Lions football program.
Throughout his career, Paterno posted 409 total wins, five undefeated seasons, two National Championships and three Big Ten titles as head coach. He is highly considered as the best coach ever in the history of college football.
Even though Paterno did a tremendous amount for the program, both academically and athletically, it is what he didn’t do that people remember him most for.
People remember that he could have done more during the sex scandal that involved his assistant coach, Jerry Sandusky, a scandal that in October 2012 left Sandusky in prison for 30 to 60 years.
Williston students have mixed reactions after the ceremony.
Senior Nick Day said, “Although Paterno was a fantastic coach and had a great college football career, I don’t believe he should be honored after the scandal. I also believe it is not in the best interest of the school and the football program. I think this looks bad for the school as a whole.”
But some believe it was right to celebrate the former coach.
“Joe Paterno donated so much of his time and effort to the program,” said senior Donny Battimelli, “and I think it is right for him to be honored for the Penn State football program.”
