Mrs. Michalski’s Teaching Tricks and Tips
Every day in Mrs. Michalski’s French class is an adventure. Students might get to play the “slap” game, memorize verb tenses to the tune of “We Will Rock You,” or have push up competitions with their teacher (who always wins). These are just a few of the tricks that Michalski has up her sleeve to keep students on their toes.
Susan Michalski has been teaching at Williston for 17 years. When asked what her favorite thing about Williston is, she knew the answer immediately. “My students. They are open, hardworking, and put up with all the craziness that occurs in my classes,” she said. Michalski lives on campus and balances her teaching role on top of taking care of two daughters, Stella and Sofia, with her husband John.
Michalski began learning French during high school but realized her passion for the language during her time at Dartmouth College. Now, she passes this passion on in the classroom.
“Mrs. Michalski has been my teacher and advisor since freshman year. She always has high expectations, but knows how to make you reach those goals,” said senior Anna Willinsky.
Another way that Michalski keeps students interested and immersed in the French language is by running an annual trip to Quebec during the winter long weekend. The group braves the intense cold to experience the culture while having fun at the Winter Carnival and going snow tubing.
Michalski believes this is a very beneficial experience for Williston students. “This trip gives students an opportunity to see language in context and realize that they have the skills to be successful in a foreign country.”
With the enthusiasm of Mrs. Michalski and other teachers, the language department at Williston continues to thrive.
