Oklahoma Wesleyan University President Bashes Students
Oklahoma Wesleyan University’s President Everett Piper is turning the spotlight on the university’s reputation after an encounter with a student in which he responded by publicly criticizing college students across the country.
Oklahoma Wesleyan is a small, evangelical Christian university that spans across 35 acres in Bartlesville, OK. The school’s acceptance rate is 58% and it is known as being a top Christian college.
An unnamed student at Oklahoma Wesleyan University approached the school president after a university chapel service to say that a homily based on I Corinthians 13 had made the student feel bad for not showing love.
In response to this complaint, President Piper wrote on the university’s website, “In his/her [the student’s] mind, the speaker was wrong for making him/herself and his/her peers, feel uncomfortable.” Piper then proceeded to prod at students from other universities across the country in his post, suggesting that they and the Oklahoma Wesleyan student were “self-absorbed and narcissistic,” and that the university setting was not meant to be a “safe place” but rather a place “to learn that life isn’t about you, but about others.”
“The goal of many a good sermon is to get you to confess your sins — not coddle you in your selfishness,” wrote Piper. He titled his post, “This Is Not a Day Care. It’s a University!”
Additional turmoil has taken place at the university recently. Issues include campus protests centered on incidents of racial injustice on campus, as well as buildings named after historical figures with racist beliefs.
Piper has been the president of Oklahoma Wesleyan since 2002. An additional quote from his blog also said that if students “want to be enabled rather than confronted, there are many universities across the land [in Missouri and elsewhere] that will give you exactly what you want, but Oklahoma Wesleyan isn’t one of them.”
“After hearing about this, there’s not a chance I would send in an application to Oklahoma Wesleyan” said Williston Northampton student Olivia Berk-Krauss ‘16.
President Piper’s actions are causing repercussions among prospective students across the nation.
While Piper acknowledged that people have disagreed with him, parents of some students at the university have been supportive as have other educators.
