Pink in the Rink
Girls Varsity Hockey played their fourth annual “Pink in the Rink” game against Hotchkiss on the night of January 30th, winning with a score of 1-0. The game, in support of breast cancer awareness, was well attended with a crowd of around a hundred people.
The families of the girls on the team supported a raffle – everyone wanted to win the Beats – and a bake sale. Ms. Kristen Jones, mother of Gabby Jones ’18, helped run the bake sale and raffle and says, “The whole hockey team is contributing.” She continues, “Every family has donated one or more items to the raffle [and] all the proceeds go to the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer foundation.”
As Ms. Jones further notes, “It’s been a team effort for all the parents.”
Sophomore Sarah Marion, who attended the game, comments, “I think that all the girls put in so much work and effort,” saying, “it means so much to not only them but everyone else that’s been affected by cancer.” She believes it was significant “that everyone has pitched in.”
The game was tough with Williston pulling ahead only in the final two minutes with a goal scored by junior Delaney Belinskas, at which point Lossone Rink erupted in cheers from the spirited Williston fans, many of whom wore pink in honor of the event.
Speaking after the game, Assistant Coach Erin Davey says, “The team played hard. We were worried about overall work ethic the first couple periods,” noting also an exceptional performance by the Hotchkiss goalie as contributing to the tight score.
Ms. Davey continues, “We needed to find a little bit more teamwork in order for us to put more goals in the net… and we found the team effort. We found a way to win, as good teams do. It was overall a great win, to put us 13-0-2.”
