Students looking for more food delivery options this year have to look no further than their phone.
There have been various changes to the student handbook this year which impact both student and faculty life. Dean of Students David Koritkoski, along with the other deans, made the decision this year to allow students to use Uber Eats and DoorDash. The change allows boarding students to easily get fast food delivered to them from the comfort of their dorms, without having to take a shuttle.
Uber Eats was founded in 2014 by Garrett Camp and Travis Kalanick, under the parent company Uber. Delivery methods include cars, scooters, bikes, or even on foot. DoorDash was founded by Tony Xu in 2013; the company is now the largest food delivery platform in the United States.
Koritkoski said of the change, “As long as it makes students happy, then I’m happy.”
In the past, Williston did not allow outside food delivery on campus. Students were only permitted to get delivery from local restaurants and had to wait for weekend shuttles to get fast food. When students were found with food from Uber eats and DoorDash in the past, they would often face consequences with dorm parents and deans.
Tyla Taylor, a Psychology teacher and dorm parent in EMV, has been teaching at Williston for four years. Taylor has conflicting opinions on Uber eats and DoorDash.
“I appreciate the convenience it allows our students, but I am hesitant because I feel like we have a little less control over who is coming to campus,” Taylor said. “That makes me feel a little uneasy.”
Alyssa Matricciani, a senior proctor in EMV from Greenville, South Carolina, disagrees.
“I think it’s a good thing that it’s added, especially because they have pick up spots,” Alyssa said. “People who don’t want to eat in the dining hall now have a chance to nourish their bodies in other ways.”
Much like Matricciani, senior boarder Gus Brown from Peapack, New Jersey, has a similar perspective.
“I’m obsessed with it,” Gus said. “I think there will be a lot less rule breakage because people are allowed to do it.”
