Ski Team Competes in New Englands
UPDATE FEBRUARY 16, 2015:
Over the weekend, the final times for the Boys Varsity GS Race came into question as JJ Celentano’s second run was accidentally counted as a disqualification rather than an eleventh place finish. The eleventh place finish gave the boys just enough points to surpass The Rivers School and take first place in the team standings. The team was informed of this change on the night of Monday the 16th.
On February 11th, the Class B New England Alpine Skiing Championships were held at Ski Sundown, located in New Hartford, Connecticut. The boys and girls faced eleven other schools, including Taft, Loomis-Chaffee, Lawrence Academy, The Rivers School, and The Miss Hall’s School.
The girls’ team had an outstanding day with both Jen Carellas ’15 and Sophie Carellas ’18 earning medals in both the slalom and giant slalom, or GS. Jen would finish in sixth place over all in the slalom and eighth for the GS. Sophie would earn second place in the slalom and fourth in the GS. The combined effort of the team concluded with them finishing in third place for the combined GS and second for the combined slalom. With these overall scores, the girls were ranked third overall in New England’s Class B Division.
The boys’ team celebrated in its own success with Devin DeVerry ’17 finishing in second place for the slalom and third in the GS, as well as Jesse Cassuto ’17, finishing fifth in the slalom, and Anthony Aquadro ’15 placing tenth in the GS. DeVerry and Cassuto’s strong appearance in the Slalom led the boys to win this year’s slalom title. Aquadro and DeVerry’s efforts also earned the team’s third place ranking in the giant slalom.
At the end of the day, the boys would be ranked second overall in NEPSAC’s Class B Alpine Skiing Division as they were narrowly edged out, with a difference of three points, by the Rivers School.
