Snowstorm Brings Mini Winter Wonderland

On the night of Friday, Jan. 28, heavy snow began to fall on Williston’s campus. It started slowly at first, but as the wind picked up, it became a full winter storm.

Despite the harsh conditions, which warranted a winter weather advisory for the weekend and the cancellation of sports and many activities, people still went out and enjoyed the winter wonderland on campus.

Caledonia McKeon, a Massachusetts native, was perfectly comfortable in the wind and snow. She walked to Dunkin twice as well as venturing to Antonio’s to experience the snowy streets of Easthampton. She loves the snow and is looking forward to more.

“Everyone made such a big deal out of this storm, but it honestly doesn’t seem that bad,” Caledonia, from Northfield, said. “I really hope we get a blizzard soon, and hopefully a Hill[‘s] holiday.”

Caledonia said that her friend, Lupe Oloyede, was hesitant to go out into the snow. Lupe is from Plano, Texas and hasn’t experienced a winter storm before. But on Saturday, January 29 she had some of her winter firsts!

“During the day, I went sledding for the first time and forgot to bring gloves,” Lupe said. “Later, I went to dinner and slipped on the snow. I’ve actually never slipped on snow before, so it was fun to see that happen. Then, after slipping, I also made my first ever snow angel.”

Even with all the fun she had, Lupe reflected that the cold and wind made her reluctant to wish for another storm. All in all, she had a fun first experience in a New England snowstorm.

“I really enjoyed playing in the snow,” she said. “I also enjoyed sitting in the dining hall with friends while watching snow fall from the window.”

Teagan Duffy, a sophomore from Maine, feels at home in the snow. She went out to play in the snow, and even taught Lupe some of the best sledding techniques.

“I love snow, and I love storms. It makes everything very quiet and serene, so I was excited for the storm,” she said. “To me, it doesn’t truly feel like winter if there isn’t snow on the ground, so I was excited to hear about the snowfall. I hope we get another one soon to keep snow on the ground a bit longer.”
