As the final horns sound on this 2012 Fall Athletic Season, let’s take a look back at how Williston’s teams did this season. Williston competes in the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) in District D-4, along with rivals Deerfield Academy and Loomis Chaffee.
Overall, at the varsity level, Williston teams had a combined 46 wins and 39 losses, giving us a .541 winning percentage. “Each season brings its share of successes and challenges, but I thought we had more than our share of successes,” says Mark Conroy, Director of Athletics.
Williston is the only Class B school in Western New England that had both their Varsity Boys’ and Girls’ Soccer teams and Varsity Field Hockey team qualify for the NEPSAC Playoffs.
Combined, the boys’ and girls’ cross country teams had a combined 19 and 5 record, with the boys goings 11-1 and the girls 8-4. Highlights of the season include senior Evan Jacobson breaking the school’s 3.1 mile course record by running a 15:57, shattering the previous record, set by Mike Gaubinger in 2004, by nine seconds. Seniors Devon Greenwood of the girls’ team and Andy Pierce and Corey Palumbo of the boys’ finished in the top 20 of the New England’s race. As a result, these three runners qualify to continue on to the All-Star New England race.
The Varsity Football Team finished the season with a 4-4 record, continuing their streak of being the only school in the Colonial League to not have a losing record in the league’s eight years of existence.
” [These are] no small feats considering how competitive NEPSAC is these days”, Conroy says. The only damp spot on this Fall season was the shortage of night games due to the EEE mosquito disease that prevented outside activities after dusk. “Night games are unique opportunities to come together to demonstrate our great [school] spirit,” says Conroy.
Conroy believes “it was another great season for Wildcat athletics!”
