Your wardrobe will soon change, and The Willistonian has a few ideas what you’ll be wearing this fall, as the weather gets cooler and the leaves start to change color.
Every fall season, summer trends are bound to go out of style. As trends like gingham shorts, Sambas, colorful Adidas Gazelles, and pinstripes fall out, many new looks are on the way.
Alicia Lindinger, a junior from Germany, believes that there is one specific summer trend, however, that is not going away.
“I think that, lowkey, linen pants are going to stay in trend because as long as it’s warm enough, everyone is going to wear linen pants,” she said. “They look so cute; they go with everything.”
This past summer, white linen pants, like the popular “Lodge Pant” from Aritzia ($128) were often worn with tube tops and cute tank tops. Now, as the weather begins to cool, the same pants are worn with sweaters.
Beginning in August, a transitional phase of fashion occurs. Leopard print, tall boots, and Birkenstock Boston clogs have been included in the in-between phrase, but now, as of Sept. 21, fall is officially here.
Aiyana Karanja, a junior from New York City, feels leopard print is here to stay.
“I think the leopard print trend is definitely going to stay because it’s more of an auburn fall tone,” she said. “Like the leopard jeans and leopard UGGs, I honestly think that’s going to carry through to the fall.”
Leopard print tops were trending this summer from Europe to America among teenage girls. The most popular was the “Printed Tulle Bandeau Top” from Zara ($17.90), often worn with a pair of low-rise baggy black jeans. It has been out of stock for more than a month.
The “Leopard Printed Low Rise Jeans” from Edikted have been trending the past month, and can be found on their website for $40.80.
The boots Aiyana referred to are called the “Classic Ultra Mini Caspian” in the color burnt cedar, selling for $160 on the UGG website.
As the print continues to trend, expect new sweaters and long sleeves as well.
Last fall brought in trends such as low-rise jeans, UGGs, off the shoulder sweaters, and tight long sleeves (specifically Skims). Skims is a brand started in June of 2019 by Kim Kardashian, and is very popular for both their short and long-sleeve bodysuits.
Lauren Martinez, a junior from South Hadley, Mass., believes that multiple trends from last fall are coming back.
“Off the shoulder sweaters I think are coming back in trend this year,” Lauren said. “Linen pants for sure, especially for our school because it’s in dress code.” Lauren also feels that “low rise jeans are definitely coming back in. SKIMS, or at least tight long sleeves, too. UGGs definitely.”
Last fall, the favorite off the shoulder sweaters were the “ OFF-THE-SHOULDER SWEATER” from H&M ($19.99) and the pricier option from Aritzia, the “Topaz Sweater” ($98).
Low-rise jeans — a staple of late 90s fashion — have been trending since last fall, and have continued all the way through summer. This summer, a specific pair of low-rise bag jeans from Pacsun became all the rage. They are known as the “Pacsun Eco Baggy Jeans” and run for $56.95.
UGG platform slippers were the shoes of last fall, and their return is expected. The specific pair are called the “TAZZ.” In the color chestnut, they cost $130.
Aiyana believes that the shoe of this fall is going to be some new form of UGG, but that platform UGGs from last fall will still be relevant.
“The fall shoe is timelessly UGGs,” she said. “It’s definitely going to be a different type of UGG. Like last year it was the platform UGG, maybe the platform UGGs will come back if like a certain celebrity wears them or something, but I definitely think UGGs are like a staple in fall fashion.”
The boot company UGG started in 1978 in Southern California, becoming part of the lifestyle in the mid 198s. By the early 2000s, the shoes became popular in New York City fashion. From there, the company grew and soon it seemed everyone had a pair of UGGs.
A new type of UGG came out recently, the “Lowmel.” It is a boot/sneaker hybrid. However, it does not seem that they will become trendy anytime soon, according to students who spoke to The Willistonian.
Fall colors often lean towards the neutral brown color scheme, but there is always an outlier.
Annika Stackmann, a senior from Guatemala, feels that there is more than one color that will be trending beside the basic browns.
“Red was really big last year and I think will be big again this year,” she said. “Gray potentially will be trendy. Oh, you know what, blue for sure. I’ve seen blue and it’s starting to rise.”
Navy blue specifically has already been trending this fall. It’s seen in sweaters, Adidas Gazelles, nail colors, and striped long sleeves. A Maroon red is appearing as well, in cute shoulder bags like the Kate Spade “Reegan Botanical Embroidered Medium Shoulder Bag” in the color “Blackberry Preserves.” It’s currently sold out on the Kate Spade Outlet website, but usually sells for $159.
As for jewelry, the ongoing battle between chunky jewelry and simple minimal jewelry continues.
Aiyana believes chunky is going to be favored this fall.
“The chunky jewelry trends are kind of taking over, more than the minimalist jewelry,” she said. “I love a good minimalist piece that can go with everything, but I definitely think the chunky jewelry is going to stay because like many of those pieces are like staples.”
Layered gold necklaces and chunky gold hoops in particular were both trending last fall, and seem to be making a comeback this year. A popular place to buy chunky jewelry is Etsy.
Annika Stackmann feels that charm bracelets in particular are the way to go.
“The charm bracelets are so cute, and I think they are going to be popular this fall,” she said.
The most desired charm bracelet is the Pandora charm bracelet, which runs for $70 for a silver base and around $60 per charm.
Other favorites are the Tiffany & Co. “Heart Tag Bracelet” in 18k gold, costing $6,200 and the “Heart Tag Toggle Bracelet” in sterling silver, which costs $650.
Every season there is an overarching aesthetic. In the summer the aesthetic was shared between “Brat summer” and “coastal granddaughter.”
The term “Brat Summer” comes from Charli XCX, an English pop star who came out with an album titled “Brat” in June of 2024. The aesthetic — an idea, a way of life immediately recognized by its shocking neon green hue — emphasizes being carefree and bold.
The coastal granddaughter style originates from teenage girls who grew up spending their summers on the east coast, especially in Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. It focuses on a simple, beachy style full of light blue and white, and stripes in particular.
Wrapped up in fall fashion trends is the long-running TV show “Gilmore Girls.” Running from 2000-2007, the show remains relevant for the warm, homey feeling it created, which blends naturally into the clothing characters — and those who watch the show — wear.
Crème colored sweaters, boots, headbands, tights with skirts, and dark colored long sleeves often fall under the category of “Gilmore Girls” style.
“You know the ‘Gilmore Girls’ style,” Annika said. “It’s timeless. I love it so much, it’s just fall.”
