Trump Receives Clean Bill of Health in Official Physical
President Trump is in “excellent health” and his first medical checkup since taking office “went exceptionally well,” a White House doctor said Friday (Jan. 19).
The president’s annual physical, which took place at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Jan. 18, is a routine practice, but Trump’s exam has garnered a lot of attention, with many casting doubt on his mental fitness.
Trump had fun with the concerns about his mental health, calling himself, in a Jan. 6 tweet, a “very stable genius” who won the presidency on his first try. He also expressed confidence before the physical.
“It better go well,” Trump told reporters Thursday. “Otherwise, the stock market will not be happy.” This tweet implies that the success of the stock market relies on Trump’s health.
The physical exam was done by Dr. Ronny Jackson, who serves as a rear admiral in the Navy. Jackson was deployed in Iraq until being pointed White House physician in 2006. President Trump will be his third administration in the White House; he worked previously with George W. Bush and Barack Obama.
President Trump was given the usual physical given to a man of his age, which include basic lab tests (cholesterol, hormone, and vitamin level tests), screening tests for age-related diseases (such as cancer or heart disease), and the standard health assessments like checking blood pressure, and the eyes, ears, and throat.
All tests came back normal. Max Livingston ’18, however, isn’t buying the president’s clean bill of health. “I am surprised,” Max said. “He has to have something wrong with him.”
Trump also took a cognitive test, on which he scored perfect marks. Dr. Jackson trusts the test.
“I can reliably say, and I think that the folks in the mental health would back me up on the fact that if he had some kind of mental, cognitive issue, that this test is sensitive enough, it would have picked up on it,” Dr. Jackson said. “He would not have got 30 out of 30. And my personal experience is that he has absolutely no cognitive or mental issues whatsoever.” He added the president had requested that the cognitive test be included as part of the exam.
Xander Rodgers ’18 said, “I am sure the doctor made the right observations and I am glad our president is in excellent health. He is the man running our country and I would hope everyone else felt the same way.”
Although, Dr. Jackson reported Trump being in “excellent health” the numbers are causing some to see the results in a different light.
The New York Times reported, “Cardiologists not associated with the White House said Wednesday that President Trump’s physical exam revealed serious heart concerns, including very high levels of so-called bad cholesterol, which raises the risk that Mr. Trump could have a heart attack while in office.”
Dr. Jackson said he prescribed a higher dose of Crestor, the brand name for rosuvastatin, to help lower Trump’s LDL levels. Many cardiologists questioned if Trump was regularly taking his medication and added that it is important to control his risk of a heart attack.
