The Grammys was not only full of musicians, but also, extravagant outfits. Some artists were praised for the outfits on the red carpet, however others were questioned on their fashion choices.

The Grammys is an annual event to honor the top musical artists of the year. This year the awards show, on Feb. 2, was dedicated to fundraising for the catastrophe of the L,A wildfires.

Esther Glazer, a senior from Newton, Mass., liked Doechii’s outfit especially because of who the designer was.

“My favorite outfit was Doechii’s Thom Browne look,” she said. “Thom Browne is one of my favorite designers because he finds a way to take traditional tailoring elements and add something new to them, like his signature cropped dress pants and stripes.

“She wore a few different Thom Browne looks throughout the evening and they were all well done. I appreciate that Doechii took a fashion risk and wore something that was not traditional,” she said.

Thom Browne is the current chair of The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA). He is praised for his “redefining” of modern fashion.

Doechii wore four different outfits including a gray off-the-shoulder pinstripe dress with accentuated hips layered on top of a white collared shirt and a gray pinstripe tie on the red carpet. She kept the signature Thom Browne detail of white, blue, and red stripes throughout her four outfits.

For her performance, she wore a color block gray suit and took it off midway through her performance to reveal a white set.

Aiyana Karanja, a junior from New York City, loved both Cardi B’s look and all four of Sabrina Carpenter’s outfits.

Cardi B, styled by Kollin Carter, wore a long mermaid style sequin animal print dress; the trail of the dress was full of feathers. The dress was a custom Roberto Cavalli, a leading luxury brand.

Robert Cavalli is an Italian fashion designer company is known for elaborate prints and statement pieces; he did not disappoint for Cardi B.

On the red carpet, Carpenter, styled by Jared Ellner, wore a long silky baby blue dress; the halter neckline was made of a twisted rope-looking material that hung down her back. The silk had a rim of baby blue feathers around both the end and the waist. The dress, according to goss.ie, was custom-made by Jonathan Anderson, head of the UK fashion label JW Anderson.

During her performance she wore a black sequin tuxedo ensemble; it was Dolce & Gabbana according to Vogue. She tore off the tuxedo off to display a baby blue bedazzled outfit.

As Vogue‘s Hannah Jackson explains, “Midway through the set, she performed an onstage quick change, draping herself in a feather-lined robe reminiscent of her dress.”

Lastly, while accepting her award, Carpenter wore a bedazzled strapless gold dress.

The beloved artist Chappell Roan has made a statement in her music and now in her Grammys outfit.

“Chappell Roan in archival Jean Paul Gaultier was somewhat unexpected,” Esther said. “I love that she always wears out-of-the-box garments and it is cool to see her appreciation for fashion and her willingness to wear an avant-garde look.”

Jean Paul Gaultier is a French fashion designer who has a much different approach to fashion than Robert Cavalli, but displays a similar statement on unconventional style.

As for the more controversial outfits of the night, Aiyana feels that there should better security on dress code specifically referring to Ye, formally known as Kayne West, and his wife.

“I 100% think the Grammys should have a stricter dress code, and honestly Kanye West should have never even been able to get on the red carpet and take pictures,” she said. “The security should have done a 360 on him and his wife at the front door of the Grammys.”

Esther agrees saying, “Bianca Censori definitely made a statement in her look. It was very unexpected, and I think it was not appropriate for the Grammy’s.”

Ye’s wife, Bianca Censori, wore a black fur coat which she took over to reveal a completely sheer slip.

Ye wore an all-black outfit consisting of jeans, a t-shirt, a simple pair of black shoes, and sunglasses.

According to an article titled “Does Kayne West Dress His Wives And Girlfriends?” by Ruby Feneley on Australia’s Marie Claire website, “It was alleged West and Censori were paying homage to the album art on West’s Vultures 1 record,” however that message did not seem to translate well to spectators.

While Esther believes Censori’s outfit was not appropriate, she doesn’t think that there should be a stricter dress code.

“I think it is important to allow for self-expression at these events and playing with the dress code can be included in that,” she said.

Comparing this year’s looks to those of the previous years, Esther says they were a little different this year and has a guess as to why.

“I think the outfits were a bit more toned down this year than last year,” Esther. “This may be because of the wildfires in California and the Grammys wanting to bring attention to that, so it was interesting to see how that impacted fashion choices.”
