Meet Mrs. Dietz, Williston Admission’s Wizard of Oz
Beth Dietz is Williston’s Admissions Visit Coordinator and she has been since September of this school year. However, Mrs. Dietz has worked in the Admissions office for six years total. Mr. Dietz can usually be found at her desk, located in the Admissions building on the first floor.
Mrs. Dietz plays a very important role in keeping order in the Williston Admissions process building. Although, some students may not know who she is, she puts in a lot of effort and hard work to make sure everything within the Admissions building is organized and runs smoothly. A typical day in the life of Mrs. Dietz, looks a little bit like this:
Mrs. Dietz arrives at work at 7:50am each day and prepares for the day ahead by confirming all the tours that have been assigned by Student Admissions Interns. She double checks each tour that has been scheduled for the day to make sure it has been accepted by a tour guide so that the tours can take place. Then, Mrs. Dietz makes business cards for all of the tour guides of the day to give to perspective families after their tour. Lastly, she checks to make sure the coffee and tea station is restocked and ready to go.
Tours, on a typical day, begin at 8:30am, Mrs. Dietz greets them and makes sure they are sorted and comfortable while they wait for their tour guide. She facilitates every prospective family’s visit to the school.
The number of families that trickle in throughout the day usually depends on how many are scheduled, what day it is, whether it is a blue week or a green week, and what the periods occur that day.
Mrs. Dietz explains, “The families arrive, I connect them with their tour guide, [and] they go out on about a 45 minute campus tour. Then, when they return, I let their interviewer know that they have returned and they then meet with their interviewer.”
Throughout the day she continues to meet and greet families, makes sure everyone is doing what they are supposed to be doing and that the families get the best first impression of Williston as possible. Her goal is to make the families feel welcomed.
Mrs. Dietz says, “The most exciting part of my day is the fact that I get to meet so many people from literally all over the world. So, I learn about cultures, about climates, just a lot about what their lives are like at their home.”
She continues, “Then they get to tell me about what they find interesting about our school, our climate and it’s a fun day actually, sometimes a little hectic with tour guides coming in, and families coming in, and especially on exceptionally busy days, trying to keep everybody straight.”
Mrs. Dietz keeps very busy throughout the day, so she does not have a set lunch time. But, when she has a few minutes to sneak away, she will usually eat a lunch brought from home in the back office. The time varies depending on when visitors are there. She likes to be at her desk as much as possible to be that welcoming person if anyone happens to pop in or just keep tabs on who is coming in and out of the building.
The day ends for her usually around 4:30pm each day when she heads out and will look to return the next day to start her routine all over again.
