Why Not Curling? Students on What Olympic Sport They’d Compete In
Now that the Winter Olympics are finished, The Willistonian has the results — not the official medal count, but the answer to this pressing question: If you were in the Olympics, what sport would you want to compete in?
The 15 sports in the winter Olympics include alpine skiing, biathlon, bobsled, cross-country skiing, curling, figure skating, freestyle skiing, ice hockey, luge, Nordic combined, short track speed skating, skeleton, ski jumping, snowboarding, and speed skating. While Williston has a large population of alpine skiers and ice hockey players, our population of lugers and curlers is sparse.
Sydni Landman, a senior from Longmeadow, Mass., would ski and shoot in biathlon, because “it’s a really good combination of two unlikely sports.”
Jackson Frechette, a senior from Easthampton, Mass., is the captain of Boys Varsity Squash. He’s ready for Olympic play, but unfortunately squash is not an option. “They should add squash to the Olympics, and that’s what I’d play” he said.
Olivia Ferebee, a freshman from Ray Brook, N.Y., and a hockey goalie at Williston replied, “Hockey, because I already play.” Fantastic choice!
Sarah Markey, a senior from Florence, Mass., had a daredevil pick.
“I would do ski cross because it just looks so fun,” she said.
Ski cross is a freestyle skiing event in which “multiple skiers directly race on a specially designed course. [which includes] natural terrains as well as artificially built features that include big jumps, rollers and high-banked turns” according to Topend Sports.
Senior Avi Falk is one of the top Williston Boys Alpine Skiers. He thinks it would be exciting to ski race in the Olympics. “Competing against and being on the level of the best of the world would be awesome,” he said.
Connor Jenkins, a junior, is a standout Varsity Boys Basketball player. He decided that if asked to compete in the Winter Olympics he would compete in “Bobsled, because it looks cool.”
Finally, Payton Bloedow, a post graduate from Prior Lake, Minn., said this was the “easiest question of her life.” Without a doubt, she would do pairs figure skating.
“It’s my absolute favorite sport of all time and my dream is to be reincarnated as a Canadian figure skater,” she said.
Gabby Thomas, Williston class of 2015, did amazing things at the 2020 Summer Olympics, blazing the trail for future Williston students in the Olympics. The next Winter Olympics are in Milano Cortina in 2026. So hit the ice or snow and start training, anything is possible!
