The Francis-Kinne Cup will remain at Suffield for the second straight year after Williston athletic teams lost a combined 9-7 in games to the Tigers.

All games were played at Suffield this year with the exception of the boys and girls cross-country teams who held their annual Shaler Invitational. At the varsity level, both schools won four games including a very close 1-0 victory from the Williston Boys Varsity Soccer Team.

This is the tenth year Williston and Suffield have competed for the cup, which is named after Rick Francis and Dennis Kinne, former athletic directors of Williston and Suffield, respectively. As Williston Athletic Director, Mark Conroy, says, “The cup was inaugurated not only to lend some meaning to the competition, but also to recognize the friendship between these two schools.”

Inscribed on the trophy are four precepts: “Friendship, Good Sportsmanship, Fair Play, and Spirit of Competitive Play.”

While this is the fifth time Suffield will take home the cup, Williston has won just three times, most recently in 2010. In 2005, the cup ended in a tie. Then, in 2011, no winner was decided because most athletic events were canceled due to a snow storm.

As Conroy says, “I always feel athletics should bring out the best in all of us and this can especially be true in rivalry games. The cup competition just adds a little more meaning.”
