Williston Students Ready to Dodge, Dip, Duck, Dive, and Dodge into Tournament

The annual Dodgeball tournament at Williston is right around the corner.

This prestigious tournament has usually been held in the winter but will now take place in the spring on April 20. It has been moved to the spring due to the many sports teams participating in post-season play the last couple of years.

The faculty at Williston work hard to provide the students with all kinds of activities outside of school. Recently, events have included the Muji basketball tournament, Easter egg hunts, and Fortnite in Reed. But none of these compare to the competitiveness of Dodgeball.

Ms. Davey is the chief organizer of the event and is excited to get it started.

“It gives the community something to do together during what could have been free time,” says Davey. “It has always been a great event and something students and faculty get really excited about.”

The rules are as they are in the movie Dodgeball. If you have not seen it, that may be something you want to watch before the tournament. Six players are in at a time, and the team must be co-ed. Eliminate the opposing team by hitting them with the dodgeball or by catching a ball thrown at you, which would resurrect a teammate that is out. All of this must be achieved by staying on your side of the court and not crossing over the center line. All calls are made final by the refs, Mr. Syfu and Mr. Johnson, who know the game better than the back of their own hands.

Sadly, there is no cash prize like there is in the movie. Instead, Williston students will be playing for something much more important: pride and bragging rights. The Williston students are not the only ones fighting for these glorious prizes. The faculty is allowed to participate as well and has often shocked the students with their superior play in previous years.

Junior Kevin Lassman is not worried about any teachers or students getting in the way of his dodgeball championship. Winning first place his freshman year, the kid knows how to get it done and is confident in his team this year.

“My team this year is very good,” says Kevin. “We have a team full of amazing, strong, young, and smart individuals.”

Lassman considers his team the “team to beat.”
