World Cup of Hockey Returns After 20 Years
The World Cup of Hockey is finally back after 20 years.
Last played in 1996, this year’s tournament is in Toronto, and lasts from September 17 until October 1 2016.
The teams in the World Cup are USA, Canada, Europe, North America, Russia, Finland, Sweden, and the Czech Republic.
Much like the Olympics, all of the top NHL players in the league are competing in this tournament. It consists of four teams in each group and they play three games each and the top two teams from each group move onto the semi-finals and then go to a championship. Since this is the first World Cup in two decades, there are very high expectations for this tournament.
JT Chamberlain, a senior hockey player at Williston, says, “I am very excited to watch the World Cup of Hockey. All the best in the NHL are competing.” Chamberlain added that he is rooting for hintry to take the trophy. He continues, “I want the USA to win.”
Nick Schofield, a senior hockey player, said that he thinks the World Cup of Hockey is better than the NHL.
“It is different because in the NHL the teams are not stacked with the best talent in the league,” Schofield said. “In The World Cup of Hockey the teams have the best players from each country.”
Canada is favored to win this year’s World Cup.
